EDUCATIONAL SETTING
Northwest Rankin Attendance
Zone is located in the central part of Rankin County School District. Accommodating
an enrollment of approximately 4,500 in kindergarten through twelfth grade,
Northwest Attendance Center boasts five buildings. Northwest Rankin Elementary
(grades K-2), Vine Street Elementary (grades 3-4), Northwest Rankin Middle
(grades 5-8), and Northwest Rankin High (grades 9-12) are located on Lakeland
Drive and Vine Drive and serve the immediate reservoir area, while Flowood
Elementary School (grades K-4) serves the Flowood area. Two additional
elementary schools are underway in the Northwest Rankin zone and the estimated
completion date is June 2004.
PARENT/COMMUNITY NETWORKING
In an attempt to create
a partnership between the school and the home, the principals and teachers
encourage involvement of families and community groups in projects to benefit
the school. All schools within the zone have active Parent Teacher organizations
that provide invaluable volunteer work at the schools. Parents and community
leaders have been strong advocates in assisting the school with realizing
and sustaining educational and extra-curricular goals and programs.
Additionally, all schools participate in the Partners in Education program, which is a direct partnership between the school and a business or community group. This program helps to enrich the educational process by direct involvement. Businesses, community groups and the school, work together to build strong schools that offer the best educational opportunities for students and thus contribute to the overall quality of life in the community.
